You will leverage relationships with reporters and conference organizers to identify new and compelling publications and venues for Foundation leaders to speak to key audiences. You love following technology trends and other public narratives that are relevant to our work, and you identify proactive opportunities to increase awareness about the Wikimedia projects.

Director of Marketing

Marin Community Foundation

Hybrid (Novato, CA)

Hybrid (Novato, CA)

Marin Community Foundation

Date Posted: 8/21/2026

About Marin Community Foundation

Marin Community Foundation (MCF) is one of the largest community foundations in the country: nearly 600 individuals and families across the Bay Area and beyond trust us to administer more than $4.3 billion in assets, and last year alone we directed more than $325 million to nonprofits.

We believe communities matter. They are our theory of change, where solutions take root and endure, where leaders are developed and where ideas built from the ground up become policy. We also believe the biggest problems of today demand local solutions, grown and scaled from the bottom up.

We deploy this theory of change by working alongside donors, nonprofit partners and community members. Our North Star: a Marin County where everyone can thrive. We have a strategic focus on affordable housing and homelessness, climate resilience and community-led change in the neighborhoods most affected by these challenges and historical inequities. Our team includes expert strategists with decades of success in creating durable change, and our entire staff is guided by core values: innovation, equity, impact, transparency, collaboration and joy.

The Opportunity

MCF is building a communications and marketing function commensurate with its scale and ambition, led by the Foundation's first Chief Communications Officer (CCO). The Director of Marketing will be a key partner in that build — the point person responsible for how MCF shows up across every marketing channel, paid and organic alike.

This is a rare combination of ownership and runway. You will set marketing strategy and execute it — owning social media, email, web, digital advertising, print, events and sponsorships. You will partner with our Communications Operations Manager to collaborate with creative vendors and agencies. And because we are focused on outcomes, not just outputs, you will build the measurement infrastructure to know what's working.

You will also partner with the CCO to support the Foundation's earned media program, extending the reach of stories the CCO places across owned and paid channels. The role arrives at a moment of visible momentum, including the Foundation's upcoming 40th anniversary in 2027 — a marketing opportunity you will help shape from the start.

The ideal candidate is a full-stack marketer: strategic enough to build the annual plan and hands-on enough to write or collaborate on the creative, brief the designer and read the analytics. You are equally comfortable stewarding a brand and stretching a budget.

A marketing leader needs a great team around them. You'll come to this role to meet established teammates at the top of their field. MCF already engages with smart folks who know us well, including a creative agency; media planner; website design firm; and professionals leading graphic design, photography and videography. We look forward to bringing your relationships and recommendations into this mix. We also have a core marketing stack ready for you, from Adobe Creative Cloud to Canva to Hootsuite and more. Now we're ready for you to take the helm.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing Strategy & Campaigns

  • Develop and execute MCF's integrated annual marketing plan across all channels — paid and organic — aligned to Foundation priorities and grounded in clear audience segmentation.

  • Design and run campaigns around MCF's mission and impact among priority audiences, including donors and prospective donors both in and outside the County, nonprofit partners and Marin residents. These campaigns will build awareness but ultimately must lead to action.

  • Lead marketing for signature institutional moments, including the Foundation's 40th anniversary, a Community Open House and initiative launches.

  • Partner with the Philanthropic Partnerships team so marketing measurably supports donor engagement, cultivation and stewardship.

Digital, Social & Email

  • Build MCF's comprehensive social media road map. Design the overarching channel strategy and editorial framework while setting performance benchmarks for downstream content creation and community engagement.

  • Define website evolution, user experience (UX) and search optimization priorities, and design performance road maps to guide development and design vendors during execution.

  • Orchestrate a macro strategy for MCF's email marketing ecosystem. Develop the long-term road map for newsletters and campaigns, establishing key parameters for list health, segmentation logic and testing frameworks.

Paid Media

  • Steer the macro allocation and return-on-investment modeling for all paid media investments.

  • Construct the integrated investment strategy across digital, print, out-of-home and sponsorship channels to maximize long-term fiscal efficiency.

  • Serve as line of sight for vetting paid media inquiries, deliver a recommendation to the CCO and execute decisions on buys or passes.

  • Establish performance guardrails for external agency partners relating to marketing.

  • Set the media execution benchmarks and brief guidelines in close partnership with the Communications Operations Manager to ensure strict partner accountability.

Brand & Creative

  • Steward the application of MCF's brand guidelines across all marketing materials — digital, print and event.

  • With support from the Communications Operations Manager, direct creative production with designers, photographers, videographers and printers from brief through delivery.

  • With support from the Communications Operations Manager, produce and maintain the Foundation's core marketing collateral, including impact materials, event assets and video storytelling.

Earned Media Support

  • Amplify earned media wins across owned and paid channels to extend their reach and shelf life.

Measurement & Analytics

  • Build and maintain the marketing dashboard. Define key performance indicators (KPIs), track performance across channels and report results and recommendations to the CCO.

  • Use data to continuously refine audience targeting, content strategy and channel mix.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive marketing experience, including ownership of both paid and organic multichannel marketing programs.

  • Demonstrated success managing paid media budgets and agency relationships, with fluency in digital advertising platforms and campaign optimization.

  • You are laser-focused on audience. You don't believe "general public" is an audience, and you know how to zero in on an audience as specifically as needed.

  • You are laser-focused on outcomes. You constantly ask what we are doing and why we are doing it, and you are comfortable pushing to adjust so outputs yield change and action.

  • You know that "raising awareness" is not a useful outcome by itself; it's a checkpoint on the path to action that advances MCF's mission and creates change in the world.

  • Hands-on command of social media strategy and content creation, email marketing and web content management.

  • Strong analytics practice. Comfort defining KPIs, working in measurement tools and turning data into decisions.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills and a sharp eye for brand consistency and visual quality. You know that brand includes more than just colors and fonts — it's everything from tone to which voices you elevate to the music and environmental impact of the materials you use at events.

  • Experience supporting media relations — press distribution, spotting a good story idea, pitching, interview prep, stewarding a story — is a plus.

  • We encourage applicants from all backgrounds — including agency, for-profit corporate environments and government — to apply. Experience in major gifts, philanthropy, nonprofits or mission-driven organizations is a plus.

  • Familiarity with Marin County and the Bay Area civic landscape is a plus.

  • Proficiency with customer relationship management (CRM), email and content platforms, and experience with data analytics, paid media and acquisition channels are required.

  • Experience with Salesforce, Campaign Monitor, project management tools and Microsoft 365 is a plus.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.

Location & Work Environment

This is a hybrid role based in Novato, California, with at least two days per week on-site. And you'll want to be here: MCF's newly redesigned headquarters, opening this fall, occupies a soaring, light-filled, converted 1930s aircraft hangar on the historic former Hamilton Field. The reimagined space was designed for the way we work now: open, collaborative and built for connection with colleagues and community.

Our team overlooks the restored Hamilton wetlands nature preserve. Situated along the popular Bay Trail biking route, we're also a 15-minute walk from the SMART train and a 15-minute drive from both downtown San Rafael and downtown Novato.

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary of $195,000–$205,000 and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision coverage; 12% employer retirement contribution; monthly stipends for Wi-Fi, cellphone and wellness; and generous paid time off.

To Apply

If you are interested in applying for this position, please send a resume and cover letter describing your interest in the role to careers@marincf.org. MCF is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages applications from people of color, persons with disabilities, women and LGBTQ+ candidates.

Additional Requirements

Marin Community Foundation participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. We will only use E-Verify once a newly hired employee has accepted a job offer and completed the Form I-9.

  • Partner with the Chief Research and Programs Officer and programmatic team to integrate communications into research and program initiatives, ensuring communication strategies, audience considerations, and dissemination opportunities are incorporated early into the process.

  • Build a sustained executive visibility and thought leadership program for the Pacific Institute leadership and subject matter experts: media relations, speaking opportunities, and rapid response commentary.

  • Represent the Pacific Institute externally on brand, marketing, and organizational positioning matters, and prepare subject matter experts for media and public appearances.

Communications Systems and Functional Leadership (25%)

  • Design and maintain the communications system: the processes, workflows, quality standards, and decision-making norms that govern how communications work gets planned, prioritized, produced, and evaluated.

  • Set priorities and manage intake across programs and initiatives, with the authority to sequence work and resolve cross-functional bottlenecks.

  • Lead organizational media strategy, steward senior media relationships, and establish spokesperson strategy and protocols.

  • Serve as the communications voice at EMT meetings, advising leadership on the strategic and external positioning implications of organizational decisions as they are being made.

  • Align communications planning with organizational strategy, funding priorities, and capacity constraints.

Team Leadership and Development (15%)

  • Foster a team culture of collaboration, creative excellence, psychological safety, and continuous learning.

  • Build and maintain a team structure that can scale as the organization grows.

  • Direct the team budget and workforce planning, including resourcing strategy, contractor and vendor portfolio decisions, and alignment of spend with organizational priorities.

  • Build strategic redundancy and shared institutional knowledge across the team, ensuring flexibility and resilience.

Execution and Quality Assurance (15%)

  • Ensure the quality, consistency, and timeliness of external communications, maintaining high editorial and strategic standards.

  • Translate complex research findings, programmatic initiatives, and partnership activities into audience-appropriate messaging.

  • Establish and enforce publication processes, timelines, and quality checkpoints.

  • Write, edit, and produce communications and campaign materials directly and on an ongoing basis, reflecting the player-coach nature of this role and the firsthand execution required by the Pacific Institute's lean structure.

Requirements

  • At least 14 years of progressive experience in marketing, strategic communications, media relations, or public affairs, with demonstrated outcomes at the organizational or enterprise level.

  • At least 7 years in a leadership role managing and developing a communications team.

  • At least 5 years in a marketing leadership role, independently responsible for a large brand.

  • Experience communicating with diverse audiences including vulnerable communities, elected officials, corporations, community leaders, and the public.

  • Experience translating program and organizational impact data into compelling external narratives and cross-functional brand storytelling for funders, partners, and the public.

  • Experience managing communications for organizations undergoing growth, transition, or structural change.

  • Fluency in other languages.

  • Experience working with international organizations, multilateral institutions, or global sustainability networks.

Compensation and Benefits

This position is eligible for paid vacation and benefits. The Pacific Institute offers an excellent compensation package, including a generous health, dental, and Institute-matched retirement plan and a competitive salary that is commensurate with experience and reflects the field. Hiring Range: $150,000 – $170,000 per year. (if selected for an interview, a salary range within our hiring range that is specific to the candidates' geographic location will be shared).

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Pacific Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Diversity is a core value at Pacific Institute. We are dedicated to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within our team and culture for two reasons: To stay true to our values and principles: We recognize that historical and current injustices have left out certain voices and perspectives from decision-making about accessing and managing water resources. We acknowledge that the representation of these groups in water-related decision-making and careers is an important step towards addressing past and current injustices. Because Pacific Institute participates in water-related decision-making, we acknowledge that hiring and retaining a diverse staff can contribute to a broader need to address systemic injustices. To better achieve Pacific Institute's mission and vision: We know that having diverse perspectives makes for better research, creative solutions, and can help us achieve our mission. We recognize that a diverse team with varied perspectives, skills, and experiences is essential for generating and scaling innovative ideas that solve increasingly complex challenges. We make a active effort to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected, heard, validated, empowered, and celebrated across different identities and cultures. We aim to constantly evolve our approach to DEI to reflect best practices in this work, just as we do with our water and climate research.

As part of this commitment, we request that all candidates include a short statement in their cover letter to address how your addition to our staff would contribute to our DEI efforts.

Irving Harris Foundation has four primary strategies: grassroots organizing and movement building to galvanize people-driven movements; advocacy, policy and systems building to address root causes that lead to disparities and shift public and private resource allocation; innovative community centered and led model development and replication to help incubate, launch and sustain new programs, ideas and institutions; and leadership and workforce development to build the capacity of current and future generations of changemakers, especially those from communities most impacted by harm who are best positioned to lead changes rooted in community that address persistent disparities. Irving Harris Foundation is a private foundation based in Chicago and funds in Illinois, nationally and to a limited extent in Israel.

In 2024, the Foundation announced that it will be sunsetting by 2032 after 85+ years in existence. As a spend-down philanthropy working in under-resourced priority areas, IHF invests in systems, policies, capacity building efforts, and leaders so that the impact of our work may endure long after Irving Harris Foundation sunsets. As the Foundation enters the final phases of spending down our assets, we are establishing our sunset programmatic and partner engagement strategies and clarifying our legacy priorities. We seek candidates who have exceptional narrative design and storytelling experience, are detail-oriented, organized and who can contribute to our organizational culture through their lived experience and commitment to racial, gender and economic equity for all. The Foundation is committed to fostering an equitable, inclusive and diverse culture, and seeks candidates who can help the Foundation achieve this aspiration.

Position Summary

IHF seeks a Director of Communications to join its Leadership Team. While IHF has worked with communications consultants and contractors, the Director of Communications will be IHF's first full-time staff communications hire and will help shape and evolve the role. This role will support IHF in advancing its strategic work through spend down, focusing on the critical role IHF's narrative plays in advancing our legacy and philanthropic impact and using communications to leverage our partners' impact now and after we sunset. Additionally, this role will support internal communications including the Foundation team's effective reporting and engagement with the Foundation's Board of Directors.

The Director of Communications will possess a deep commitment to IHF's mission, and be able to identify and implement strategic communications activities that reflect the Foundation's legacy and contribute to change in the reproductive and birth justice, early childhood, infant mental health, and Jewish Values ecosystems through an integrated strategy. In addition, they will be considering how the Foundation's legacy could impact the philanthropic sector. The director will be excited and motivated to pursue innovative approaches and experimental thinking and know how to translate these ideas into a practical course of action.

As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Communications will work in collaboration across the organization to create and execute an effective communications strategy that fits the organization today and looks toward the future. The Director of Communications will maintain and elevate IHF's positioning, shape narrative and storytelling, lead projects, provide communications support to staff and when possible, external partners, and determine messaging and communications channels.

Demand Justice

THE OPPORTUNITY

For decades, the right invested billions in capturing the judiciary—and succeeded. They packed the courts with extremists and anti-populist lawyers while progressives failed to mount sufficient resistance.

Today we're living with the consequences: Donald Trump enjoys criminal immunity, Roe v. Wade was overturned, the Voting Rights Act stands gutted, and research shows that federal courts overwhelmingly rule in favor of corporations over working people.

Now Trump is taking it further. Run-of-the-mill extremist nominees are no longer enough—judicial nominees must now show their loyalty to Trump above all else. He is determined not just to break the law, but to dismantle it—attacking institutions, individuals, and anyone standing in his way.

This moment requires aggressive, strategic, and disruptive opposition to the dismantling and corruption of the rule of law by Trump and his cronies.

Demand Justice is at the helm of this fight – fighting to win back our courts so that we can take back our country.

Demand Justice seeks a Senior Communications Advisor to lead a robust communications program that builds public support for a judiciary that serves the people, not the powerful.

The Senior Communications Advisor will develop and lead communications strategies that accelerate Demand Justice's objectives, expand the organization's reach and brand, and drive the national conversation around court reform.

This is an incredible opportunity to play a key role in an unapologetic, innovative organization fighting to protect our rights and democracy and make sure the courts work for all.

WHO WE ARE

Demand Justice is a bold, disruptive advocacy organization that wages advocacy and media campaigns. We use all our organizational tools — a c3, c4 and PAC — to stiffen the spines of those in power to fight for the rule of law and move the entire public discourse of the courts towards reform.

Demand Justice's Core Mission:

  • Expose Trump's court takeover: Force a public reckoning about the right-wing's capture of our courts and Trump's authoritarian grip on judicial power; shock, educate, and activate a progressive base to invest in the fight for our courts.

  • Hold Democrats accountable: Ensure Democrats in power and running for office stand up and fight back—rewarding them when they do and fearlessly holding them accountable when they don't.

  • Build support for bold reforms: Propose and build consensus around bold reforms to the Supreme Court, lower courts, and the judicial system generally.

  • Fight Trump's Court nominees, including any second-term nominees to the Supreme Court.

WHO YOU ARE

  • A Politically Savvy Communications Expert. You have deep experience developing and leading communications strategies in politicized environments, whether that be on campaigns, on the Hill, or in a progressive advocacy organization. You can navigate high-level politics and complex relationships with levels of nuance.

  • A Bold, Creative Strategist with Relentless Drive. You have an unyielding drive for results and a knack for boldness and creativity. You channel your energy and competitiveness into developing an abundance of strategies and ideas that are creative, strategic, and ambitious – and help move the needle.

  • A Tireless Campaigner and Consumer of Media. You have a passion for justice and holding those in power accountable. You understand the strategy behind campaign communications and seek working in dynamic environments where the pace and energy feel more campaign than nonprofit. You have your pulse on the media and shifts in public opinion and are first to identify an opportunity – along with a plan for how to insert your principal's voice into breaking news.

  • A Trusted Resource and Relationship Builder. You are intentional about cultivating and maintaining relationships with media and key influencers. You have a reputation for being responsive and a trusted resource for reporters.

  • A Thought Partner and Collaborator. You value thought partnership to test ideas, sharpen strategies, and solve complex challenges together. You like collaborating with colleagues across teams and will utilize their research and analyses to create media opportunities and inform messaging.

  • An Excellent People Manager. You actively create an environment where people feel included and supported in their work. You understand how to motivate and manage staff, vendors, and consultants to deliver high-quality, compelling work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In partnership with the President, develop ambitious communications goals and strategies and drive implementation across a variety of channels, including earned media, social media, and paid communications.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure communications are aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.

  • Identify and create opportunities to insert Demand Justice's voice and perspective into breaking news and emerging courts-related issues.

  • Drive a robust earned media plan that translates strategies and concepts into well-designed, compelling pitches that lead to placements in strategic outlets.

  • Distill complex legal and policy information into accessible, compelling content, ranging from paid ads to policy reports to social media graphics, that elevates the issues and Demand Justice's profile.

  • Produce high-quality, timely written communications content, including press releases, media advisories, statements, reports, and talking points.

  • Oversee Demand Justice's website, branding, social media, and other owned platforms.

  • Manage a Press Secretary, Manager of Digital and Creative Content, website vendor, and closely collaborate with consultants.

  • In partnership with the Manager of Digital and Creative Content, develop a comprehensive social media strategy to define target audiences, tone of voice, and goals for overall performance.

  • Cultivate and maintain strong external relationships with media and key influencers.

  • Coordinate with external partners on joint press and media strategies and activities.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • 12+ years of communications experience in politics and/or advocacy campaigns.

  • A keen understanding of complex political environments and campaign communications.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing strategic communications campaigns and media relations.

  • Experience in digital and media strategy, with demonstrated experience in managing multi-channel content strategies, engagement efforts, and public relations.

  • A strong instinct for powerful storytelling and how language motivates and persuades audiences.

  • Track record of building relationships with reporters and successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.

  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to tailor messaging and distill complex information into concise and compelling language and content.

  • Adept in using research, legal analysis, policy, and other data-informed resources to conceptualize messaging that appeals to a diverse set of audiences.

  • Superb interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including media, influencers, and coalition partners.

  • Skilled in distilling high-level goals and concepts into clear direction for direct reports and vendors.

  • Results-oriented with a proven ability to perform well under pressure and excellent judgment.

  • Willingness and ability to respond to breaking news, often outside the workday.

  • Sense of humor and positive attitude.

  • Commitment to the mission of Demand Justice.

Senior Account Executive

Miller Ink

Remote

Remote

Miller Ink

Date Posted: 8/10/2026

The work

American public life is more divided than it has been in generations. A growing field of foundations, researchers, and practitioners is working to change that — building trust across lines of difference, strengthening civic institutions, and helping people find common ground with those they disagree with.

Miller Ink helps them get heard.

We’re hiring a Senior Account Executive to lead client work in this space. You’ll help position advocates, researchers, and changemakers whose work depends on being credible to audiences across the political spectrum — which makes this some of the most demanding and most interesting communications work in the field. Pitching a story that lands equally well with a progressive outlet and a conservative one is genuinely hard. If that challenge appeals to you, keep reading.

You’ll also work across Miller Ink’s broader portfolio, which spans crisis communications, public affairs, technology, real estate, and nonprofits.

What you’ll do

  • Strategy. Build and execute communications strategies across earned and owned media. Track what’s working, refine what isn’t, and spot opportunities as they emerge.

  • Writing. Draft and edit op-eds, pitches, press releases, talking points, blogs, and social content. Strong writing is the center of this job, not a side requirement.

  • Media. Develop real relationships with reporters and build media strategies that reflect how coverage actually happens.

  • Client leadership. Serve as a primary point of contact — setting expectations, managing timelines, and steering account teams toward work that exceeds what clients thought they were getting.

  • Team leadership. Mentor junior colleagues, give feedback that makes them better, and coordinate designers, vendors, and outside partners on integrated campaigns.

Who we’re looking for

You have at least five years of professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, government, political campaigns, or a related field, plus a bachelor’s degree.

  • You’re an exceptional writer. This is the requirement we bend on least. We’ll ask for samples.

  • You can write to people who don’t already agree with you. Much of our work only succeeds if it reaches across divides. Comfort operating outside a single political register is essential.

  • You’re organized and accountable. You manage several projects at once, you hit deadlines, and details don’t slip past you.

  • You’re good with people. Clients, colleagues, reporters, and junior staff all need to want to work with you.

  • You’ve managed or mentored others — or you’re ready to. If you’ve supervised junior staff, great. If you’re a journalist or in-house communicator who hasn’t yet had direct reports but has the instincts and wants to build the skill, we’re interested. Tell us how you think about it.

Crisis communications experience is a plus but not required.

A note for people coming from adjacent fields

Some of our strongest colleagues arrived from newsrooms, Capitol Hill, campaigns, and nonprofit communications teams rather than from agencies. If you’ve spent years covering civic life, faith, or polarization as a reporter, or running communications inside a mission-driven organization, you may be a better fit for this role than your résumé suggests. Apply.

Why Miller Ink

  • Compensation: $100,000 starting, with genuine advancement potential. We promote from within.

  • Benefits: Generous medical, dental, and vision plans; retirement plan with company profit sharing; competitive paid time off.

  • Hybrid: In-office time that builds real working relationships, with flexibility around it.

  • Mentorship over perks: At a moment when puppies and beer pong pass for benefits, we’ve focused on what we think matters more — mentoring people, creating professional opportunities, and building a culture that delivers for clients and colleagues alike. We were named a Best Place to Work in 2022 and we’ve worked to stay one.

  • Clients who matter: Our work supports organizations changing lives at real scale.

Salary

$100,000 starting, with genuine advancement potential.

How to Apply

Send a resume, a brief note on why this role interests you, and two writing samples — ideally one persuasive piece (op-ed, pitch, or advocacy writing) — to eliana@miller-ink.com.

About Housing California

Since 1988, Housing California (Housing CA) has worked to create a California with homes, health, and prosperity for all in thriving, sustainable communities. We bring together a diverse, cross-sector network to prevent and end homelessness, increase the supply of safe, stable, affordable homes, and reverse the legacy of systemic racial and economic inequities by building power among the people most impacted by housing injustice in partnership with cross-sector partners, shaping the narrative, and advocating for the passage of transformative statewide policy solutions. Learn more about long term policy agenda here and explore additional information about Housing CA’s current legislative priorities on our website at www.housingca.org.

Position Summary

California's housing and homelessness crisis will not be solved by policy wins alone; it requires a fundamental shift in how the public understands who deserves a home and why. As Communications Director, the incoming leader owns Housing CA's narrative and communications strategy end-to-end: setting the organization's voice, translating policy and legislative work into public narrative that moves people, and running the media and content operation that gets that narrative into the world.

This is a senior leadership role. The Director manages a small communications team and consultants, and integrates communications work across legislative and regulatory affairs, power building, and organizational strategy. Externally, they lead media relations, rapid response, and public narrative strategy in service of Housing CA's “big tent” approach, building a shared voice across a broad and diverse constituency and centering the people most affected by housing instability and homelessness.

The position is based in Sacramento (hybrid), with regular statewide travel and occasional early-morning, evening, and weekend commitments. The right candidate is energized by the pace of a live legislative and campaign calendar, including a current statewide affordable housing bond campaign and brings the seniority and judgment to lead the function independently.

Areas of Leadership and Expertise

Strategic Communications Execution & Media Advocacy

Runs Housing CA's public-facing communications operation (media, content calendar, and campaign comms) with the rigor a live legislative and electoral calendar demands.

Responsibilities:

  • Owns and executes the annual communications plan and calendar, including newsletters, e-blasts, social media, and the op-ed pipeline.

  • Leads media relations and advocacy: writing, editing, and distributing op-eds, press releases, and statements, and identifying earned media opportunities.

  • Leads rapid response communications, positioning Housing CA quickly and credibly as news and political developments unfold.

  • Leads communications strategy for major campaigns, including the current statewide affordable housing bond campaign.

  • Prioritizes competing media requests, speaking engagements, and writing opportunities, and prepares the Executive Director and other key staff for interviews and public appearances.

  • Manages communications consultants, briefing them clearly and holding their work to a high standard.

  • Leads communications planning for major organizational moments, including the annual conference and Advocacy Day.

  • Represents Housing CA at public events, coalition spaces, and media engagements.

Key qualifications:

  • Track record running a communications calendar and media relations function end-to-end.

  • Experience leading rapid response communications in a fast-moving news or political environment.

  • Experience managing consultants or agency partners.

  • Comfortable representing an organization externally and prepping senior leaders for public-facing moments.

  • Fluency with digital communications, media monitoring, email marketing, CMS, social media, and analytics tools.

  • Experience supporting a live campaign — ballot measure, legislative push, or comparable — under real time pressure.

  • Strong writing and editing skills across press, digital, and public-facing formats.

Narrative & Communications Strategy Leadership

Leads the development and execution of Housing CA's narrative change and communications strategy, translating policy priorities and lived experience into public narrative that shifts how people understand housing and homelessness.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes Housing CA's narrative change strategy, applying tested frameworks and research to shift the stories, values, and perceptions that shape public understanding.

  • Owns Housing CA's strategic communications plan and style guide, maintaining a consistent, values-forward voice across every channel and audience.

  • Guides the writing, editing, and production of publications, campaigns, and communications materials to a high editorial standard.

  • Partners with the power-building team to elevate resident voice and develop spokespeople, keeping policy work grounded in lived experience.

  • Serves as Housing CA's internal thought partner on narrative, building staff capacity to apply narrative strategy across programs and campaigns.

Key qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in strategic communications, narrative change, or advocacy communications, ideally on behalf of low-income communities and communities of color.

  • Working knowledge of narrative research and tested frameworks, and fluency applying them practically.

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, economic, and housing justice reflected in prior work.

  • Skilled at translating complex policy or legislative material into accessible public narrative.

Organizational & Systems Thinking

Connects communications work to Housing CA's long-term mission, integrating narrative, legislative advocacy, and power building into a coherent systems-change approach.

Responsibilities:

  • Aligns communications strategy with organizational planning, budgeting, and impact tracking.

  • Collaborates with the legislative/regulatory affairs and power-building teams so communications reinforces policy and organizing strategy.

  • Operates with a high degree of autonomy and sound judgment as a senior organizational leader.

  • Brings fresh thinking to a fast-changing coalition and legislative environment, adapting priorities as opportunities shift.

Key qualifications:

  • Experience operating in advocacy, legislative, or coalition-based environments, with a well-developed communications toolkit.

  • Demonstrated ability to own and manage narrative and messaging strategy at a senior level.

  • Comfort holding “inside voice / outside voice” tension across public, coalition, and legislative spaces.

Team Leadership & Development

Leads, coaches, and develops a small communications team, contributing to Housing CA's senior leadership as a whole.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages direct reports, coaching for growth in craft, judgment, and career development.

  • Builds a collaborative, low-ego team culture that supports growth at every level.

  • Contributes to organizational leadership: shaping culture, advancing equity commitments, and participating in strategic planning.

  • Proposes and monitors the communications budget and supports fundraising for the program.

Key qualifications:

  • Experience managing and developing communications staff, including hands-on coaching.

  • Collaborative, low-ego leadership style.

  • Track record as a senior leader who integrates team output into broader organizational strategy.

Our ideal candidates may have experience that doesn’t directly match the qualifications above, and we encourage people with equivalent experience to apply.

Compensation, Benefits, and Location

This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Deputy Director of Programs. The Director will provide leadership for a communications manager. The salary range $120,000 - $150,000 depending on experience.

Benefits package includes fully paid medical, dental, and vision for employee and 25% paid medical, dental and vision for dependents, paid parental leave, long-term disability and group life insurance coverage; commuting subsidy; cell phone/at home internet subsidy; 403(b) retirement plan with 3.5% employer contribution; generous vacation (3+ weeks, depending on tenure), sick leave (8 hours per month + employees start with 8 hours of leave), 12 paid holidays; organization-wide closure during the last week of December and a shortened workweek during the summer legislative break; training and professional development opportunities; and a hybrid work environment.

This position is based in our office in Sacramento and requires a significant in person presence in and around our office and the state capitol in downtown Sacramento. The position will have the opportunity to work remotely from their home if their presence is not needed in the office or around the capitol.

The position is expected to participate in regular travel (mostly in California) including the following engagements: twice yearly Board of Directors meetings (sometimes held in Sacramento); annual 2-3 day staff retreat; annual 3-day Housing California conference (often in Sacramento); annual 2-3-day statewide RUN summit (sometimes in Sacramento); plus various conferences or in-person partner meetings, based on need and interest.

Our Culture

Housing California is committed to creating a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace that fosters a culture of belonging, ongoing learning and collaboration, and supports, stabilizes, and incentivizes people to join the Housing California team and stay for the long game.

We value having staff who come from communities that are most impacted by the issues we address. We especially encourage Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and people of color; people from families that have immigrated to the U.S.; people who have been unhoused or experienced housing instability; women; LGBTQIA+ people; system-impacted people; and people with disabilities to apply for these positions.

We aim for our work to be both effective and sustainable; we balance required travel during some parts of the year and the fast-paced legislative calendar with a commitment to our team’s mental and physical health.

Services Overview

The ideal human for this project is self-motivated and can work independently with little to no oversight on assigned new business projects. You’ll excel at keeping track of (and constantly prioritizing!) multiple tasks at once, without dropping the ball. Our dream coordinator is proactive, enterprising and solution-oriented.

NOTE: We need a proactive coordinator who checks in daily when working on a proposal with us to maintain our new business tracker and ensure all proposals are submitted on time.

Project Management & Operations

  • You’ll create a project plan for each proposal, which includes dedicating time on Forthright staff’s calendar to review and approve the proposal and scoping.

  • You’ll lead business tasks (checking in during Forthright’s business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET, Monday - Friday).

  • You’ll write the first, complete draft of every new business proposal using a combination of internal AI tools, call notes, RFP requirements and your own expertise.

  • You’ll lay out beautiful, easy-to-scan proposals, including crafting the cover page and creating graphics, as-needed, using plug-and-play existing tools. (You do not need to be a designer or have any design skills to succeed.)

  • You’ll edit proposals based on client requests.

  • Proven ability to dissect complex RFPs, extract the exact deliverables needed, and ensure 100% compliance in the final proposal

  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining brand integrity through copy; must be able to use Forthright’s brand guidelines and produce/edit high-quality content using our brand voice.

  • Authorized to work in the United States

  • Knowledge of online calendars and scheduling tools (specific focus on Google Suite)

  • Experience with and comfort using AI tools (We use Gemini for Google Workplace.)

  • Comfort using plug-and-play design tools (like Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar software) to build clean, beautiful and easy-to-scan documents

  • Excellent phone, email and Slack communication skills, asking questions and clarifying details when needed

  • Basic math skills for timesheets and project budgets

  • Highly organized and able to multitask and work well with fast-paced directions and instructions

  • Able to anticipate the needs of others in order to ensure their seamless and positive experience

  • Able to manage time effectively and efficiently

  • Able to organize, manage and maintain large amounts of files, tasks, schedules and information

About You

You want to make the world a better place for kids. You’re a proposal coordinator who is excited about working with a fun, smart startup team – and are passionate about simply making life (and the new business process!) easier for our team. If you get a rush from turning a blank page into a beautifully formatted proposal and never let a detail slip through the cracks, you’re exactly who we’re looking for.

You’ll thrive as a valued part of our team if:

  • You eat tight deadlines for breakfast. The words “deadline in three days” don't send you into a panic; they snap you into focus. You thrive in a fast-paced environment and know how to ruthlessly prioritize when multiple tasks land on your desk at once.

  • You’ve got impeccably high standards for yourself. You have an incredible attention to detail and intolerance for errors. Mistakes happen, of course, but you fail gracefully and with humor.

  • Continual improvement is your jam. You’re always looking for a smarter way to do something, and you don’t make the same mistake twice. When we get feedback on a proposal, you ensure we learn and grow from every last bit of it.

  • You are an expert-level cat-herder. You’re comfortable taking charge of the proposal process, which includes confidently managing up. You aren't afraid to firmly (but kindly!) ask for what you need, when you need it. You block off time on collaborators' calendars and ensure everyone hits their deadlines, so you can hit yours.

  • Feedback is your favorite. You know some discussions are hard, but having a hard discussion is much better than not having one at all. You deliver and expect open, candid and respectful feedback, all day, every day.

  • You are fiercely autonomous. You don't wait around for someone to tell you what to do next. You are a self-starter who excels at working independently with little to no oversight, anticipating the team's needs before they even have to ask.

  • You identify with our mission. You have a love of kids and a dedication to making them successful.

Selection Process

We want to be totally transparent about how we hire, so you aren’t left guessing. Here’s exactly what happens when you apply to work with us at Forthright:

  • Application Form: We leave our application open for a full month. Also, please skip the cover letter. We mean it!

  • A 15-Minute Task: We'll review all of our applications on a rolling basis and reach out to the most promising candidates with a short exercise. It should take 15 minutes, tops. We’d much rather you spend the time you would have spent creating a cover letter simply showing us what you can do here. If you meet the requirements of the exercise, you officially make our interview shortlist.

  • Chatting with Niki (VP of Marketing and New Business): We’ll select about 15 people from that shortlist for a “getting to know you” video call with Niki Juhasz.

  • Chatting with Katie (CEO): From there, we'll narrow things down to about eight finalists who will meet with our Founder for a final conversation.

  • Paid Task: We'll want to see you in action – so we'll give you a portion of a real proposal we're creating and pay you a project fee to help us create our submission. We are looking to assess the quality of your work and how quickly you can adapt to our existing process.

  • Getting to Work: That’s it for the selection process! Our goal is to bring on at least four contractors, get you onboarded, and start assigning actual proposal work to you right away. (We do lead a robust onboarding process so you have what you need to succeed!)

Location

All roles at Forthright are permanently 100 percent remote, and the contractor can live anywhere in the United States. Contractors must have the availability and willingness to work during Forthright’s business hours (8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EST).

Compensation

Hours & Rate: We typically pay $175 per proposal. On average, we spend between 3-7 hours per proposal. We have an AI tool set up to help write our proposals, in addition to a designed template! You’ll never start a proposal from complete scratch.

We consider contractors for contracts on the basis of merit, qualifications, and business needs and without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, age, disability, alienage or citizenship status, ancestry, marital status, creed, genetic predisposition or carrier status, sexual orientation, veteran status, familial status, status as a survivor of domestic violence, or any other status or characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.

Chief External Affairs Officer

Corporate Energy Buyers Association (CEBA)

Hybrid (Washington, DC)

Hybrid (Washington, DC)

Corporate Energy Buyers Association (CEBA)

Date Posted: 8/10/2026

Chaloner has partnered with the Corporate Energy Buyers Association on their search for a Chief External Affairs Officer.

About CEBA

The Corporate Energy Buyers Association (c6) is a business association with a mission to activate energy buyers and their partners to drive low-cost, reliable, carbon-free global energy systems.

The Clean Energy Buyers Institute (c3) is the affiliated public benefit charity that advances low-cost, reliable, carbon-emissions free global energy systems. The c6 and c3, collectively “CEBA,” is an inclusive community of energy buyers, clean energy providers, service providers, NGOs, philanthropies, and clean energy thought leaders.

Position Overview

The Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO) is a C-suite executive and member of CEBA's Executive Leadership Team (ELT), reporting directly to the CEO and working alongside the Chief Business Officer, SVP for Policy, SVP for Energy Transactions, and SVP for Global Programs. The CEAO leads three interconnected functions, Communications, Government Affairs, and Development, across CEBA.

The CEAO is the architect and steward of CEBA's external voice and market position, its political strategy, and its philanthropic and corporate partnership growth. At a moment of historic opportunity, with explosive growth in energy demand placing the customer voice, represented by CEBA's 330+ member companies representing more than $40 trillion in market value, at the center of the global energy conversation, the CEAO will position CEBA to lead that conversation: shaping policy outcomes through credible bipartisan engagement, building the brand as the preeminent voice of energy buyers, and significantly growing the philanthropic and corporate partnership base that fuels CEBA's mission driven work.

The CEAO will collaborate closely with the CEO and the rest of the ELT to drive strategy, execute against short and long term objectives, and define and meet metrics of impact. The role includes substantive engagement with the c3 and c6 Boards of Directors, the key CEBA members, and the senior leadership of CEBA member companies. The CEAO will also serve as a strong people manager, building and leading a high-performing team while fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.

The Role

The CEAO owns three interconnected functions, Communications, Government Affairs, and Development, and is personally accountable for CEBA's brand, its political capital, and its philanthropic growth trajectory. The CEAO leads a team that includes the VP for Government Affairs, the Director for Development, and senior leadership across Events, Marketing, and Communications with that structure to be finalized in consultation with the CEO and CBO. The CEAO's leadership spans the ELT and Boards, as well as each of CEBA's three functional pillars.

Executive Leadership and Organizational Stewardship

  • Contribute as a full ELT member to organization-wide decisions on strategy, budget, personnel and culture, not only within External Affairs.

  • Set the strategic agenda, budget, and resourcing for External Affairs, and hold the function accountable to clear metrics of political, reputational, and financial impact.

  • Build, develop, and retain a high-performing leadership team across Communications, Government Affairs, and Development.

  • Serve as a primary point of engagement for the c3 and c6 Boards and leader-members, ensuring they have real insight into CEBA's external posture and the political and philanthropic landscape.

The pillars below define what the CEAO will lead across the ELT, the Boards, and each of these functions.

Voice and Market Position (Communications)

  • Own CEBA's brand and market position as the preeminent voice of the energy buyer, setting the strategy and overseeing the execution and delivery of the strategic priorities as it relates to the Government Affairs and Development narratives. Continue to build the CEO's external platform while establishing the CEAO as a credible, visible spokesperson for CEBA in their own right. Represent CEBA to national and trade press, at flagship convenings such as Summit and Leadership Event, and at venues like CERAWeek, NYCW, and potentially the World Economic Forum.

  • Oversee the strategy for owned, earned, and paid media, digital and social presence, and member-facing communications, delegating execution to a strong communications team while retaining editorial judgment on anything with reputational or political significance.

Political Strategy and Government Affairs

  • Own CEBA's political capital: relationships with federal and state legislators, Administration officials, and governors, and CEBA's overall policymaker engagement strategy, set jointly with the SVP for Policy, SVP for Energy Transactions, and SVP for Global Programs.

  • Build and personally lead a credible, durable, bipartisan government affairs operation, engaging directly at the moments that matter most, including with the Administration, newly elected members of Congress, and state and local officials, while delegating day-to-day leadership and execution to the VP for Government Affairs.

  • Guide and support CEBA's political engagement strategy, including collaboration with the CEBA PAC and relationships with party committees, and build coalitions with member companies and allied trade associations to advance shared policy objectives.

Philanthropic and Corporate Growth

  • Hold primary accountability for the c3's philanthropic revenue trajectory, sustaining roughly 20% year-over-year growth from a current base of approximately $12M, with a goal of roughly doubling that base by year-end 2029.

  • Personally cultivate and close principal-level gifts ($1M+) and partnerships across the c3 landscape including but not limited to institutional philanthropy, ultra-high-net-worth donors, and corporate philanthropy, while building the team and pipeline needed to sustain growth at scale.

  • Partner with the CEO and Boards to convert their networks into warm introductions and high-leverage asks, and lead the corporate partnership growth beyond core membership dues.

  • Build development team capacity beyond its current single director role, and put in place the stewardship infrastructure, donor narratives, and reporting needed to support a growing and increasingly sophisticated funder base.

What We're Looking For

  • At least 20+ years of progressively senior experience across some combination of strategic communications, brand and marketing, institutional fundraising and government affairs including significant C-suite or comparable executive leadership.

  • A demonstrated track record of building and leading high-performing teams across multiple disciplines, and of stepping in personally when the situation demands it.

  • Substantial direct federal legislative experience, or comparable policy-driving experience off the Hill, or senior corporate government affairs or trade association leadership in the energy sector, with the credibility to lead a bipartisan government affairs operation.

  • Deep expertise in at least two pillars: Communications, Government Affairs, and Development, credible judgment in the third, and a track record of hiring strong functional leaders to close any remaining gap.

  • A track record of building or significantly growing a philanthropic or corporate development function, ideally including direct ownership of multi-million-dollar fundraising goals and principal-gift solicitation.

  • Genuine subject matter engagement in energy, climate, sustainability, cleantech, utility engagement, corporate procurement, or related policy and markets.

  • An influential, credible professional network, ideally within clean energy, climate, energy policy, or related philanthropic and corporate communities.

  • Superior executive-level written and verbal communication, with the presence and credibility to represent CEBA to Members of Congress, governors, CEOs, foundation principals, and the press.

Practical Considerations

  • Eligible to work in the United States.

  • Ability and willingness to work nontraditional hours and travel up to 30% of the time.

  • Based in the DC office at least three days per week.

Compensation and Benefits

CEBA offers competitive executive-level compensation and a comprehensive bonus and benefits package, including eligibility for CEBA's annual bonus and incentive plan based on both organizational and individual performance.
