For nearly 50 years, Samaritans volunteers – selected, trained and  supported by a dedicated professional staff – have provided compassionate and non judgmental support, free of charge, to callers through its Helpline, and now to texters as  well. 

This growing organization provides prevention, intervention, and postvention services  that make our communities healthier and happier, and reduces the stigma associated  with suicide and mental health concerns. Samaritans works to prevent suicide and support those who have lost someone to  suicide throughout Greater Boston and MetroWest Massachusetts. Our services are  free, confidential, and nonjudgmental. We are located in downtown Boston. 


Chief Executive Officer  


The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for leading the  organization’s initiatives to build awareness of its lifesaving suicide prevention services.  These responsibilities are focused on strategy and narrative, management, media and  public affairs, and communications.  

This is a growing organization. As such, the person in this Senior Director role has an  opportunity to shape and develop the marketing and communications function for  Samaritans. 


  • Develop and execute strategic marketing and communications plans, awareness campaigns, and external activities via paid, donated, earned, and owned media platforms. 
  • Manage brand image externally, including overseeing the management of the  organization’s website and social media channels, to ensure the Samaritans  brand is well-regarded, respected, and revered. 
  • Expand organizational reach beyond current stakeholders, volunteers, and  donors, resulting in increased engagement, service utilization, and awareness.
  • Work closely with other departments to monitor and analyze stakeholder  engagement, adjusting promotional strategy and materials accordingly. 
  • Oversee print and digital promotional materials, such as annual report and other  collateral publications 


  • Develop and implement rapid response / crisis communications strategies, managing internal staff in the response to a crisis, preparing leadership for public engagement, and evaluating the organization’s response 
  • Proactive identification of media opportunities, securing high-value media placements around key issues, preparing leadership for media opportunities, managing media lists and press contacts 
  • Oversee design, development, and dissemination of electronic newsletter
  • Place, pitch, and publish various public media content, developing and maintaining relationships with relevant journalists, editors, and producers


  • Support special events and external audience engagement opportunities 
  • Contracts and projects with communications vendors and consultants
  • Supervise one direct report employee
  • Stay current on framing conversations surrounding suicide and mental health
  • Collaborate with leadership team and colleagues to ensure strategic alignment  and cadence of marketing and communications activities 
  • Execute activities on time and within budget 
  • Prioritize concurrent tasks and projects, delegate deliberately, adapt quickly to  changing priorities, and help set and meet deadlines 
  • Experience and comfort maintaining strong relationships with journalists, editors,  major press outlets, and influencers across print, digital, and broadcast media 
  • Develop and maintain metrics to track the efficacy of communications efforts 
  • Knack for storytelling, evoking shared values, and moving people to action 
  • Excellent presentation and oral communication skills

  • At least five years of experience in similar role with aligned responsibilities,  including experience in a management-level role 
  • A strong team player  
  • A calm resourceful problem-solver  
  • A desire to learn and develop commensurate with a growing organization and  team 
  • Outstanding work ethic, self-motivated and takes initiative 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully

  • Starts at $95,000
