Nonprofits and foundations are reckoning in real time with the ubiquity and enormity of racism – and asking themselves whether they are doing enough to deconstruct racist systems inside their (virtual) walls and in society. As a nonprofit (and majority-white) research organization, the Urban Institute has spent decades researching disparities that have been created and perpetuated by racism. Today, we are reexamining how we confront it in our research, communications, outreach – and within our organization.
