Laura Washington joined the Foundation as Director of Communications in April 2015.  In this newly created role, Ms. Washington is building the Foundation’s communications function, developing and implementing a strategic communications plan that supports the organization’s core mission and vision, setting and guiding strategy for all communications, website, public relations engagement, and media activities.

Ms. Washington brings more than two decades of public affairs and journalism experience to the organization, having most recently served for a decade at the New-York Historical Society.  There, as Vice President for Communications, she led the communications and media strategy that helped raise the institution’s profile with the public and media, revamped the website, and worked to improve government and community relations.  Prior to that, she worked at Consumers Union, CUNY, Time Warner, Dow Jones, and Condé Nast Publications.

Ms. Washington earned a BA in history from Vassar College and holds an MS in Strategic Communications from Columbia University.  Ms. Washington has served on the Tri-State Community Advisory Board of the Educational Broadcasting Corporation since 2008, and is a member of the WNET programming committee and was an inaugural member of the Council of Urban Professionals’ Leadership Board.
