Ian Haney López

Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law University of California, Berkeley

Ian teaches and writes about race and law (aka “critical race theory”) at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law. He currently focuses on the use of racism in electoral politics. Beyond his scholarly research and with the support of unions and foundations, for the last decade Ian has also been running focus groups, deep surveys, and message testing to explore what kinds of racial messages will divide voters—and what kinds of messages will unify across those divisions to build the broadest coalition. His findings have appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post, among other places, and also feature in his books Dog Whistle Politics (2014) as well as Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America (2019).
