The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew’s reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew’s resources.
This position, based in Pew’s Washington, DC office, reports to the manager, communications and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the health programs portfolio. The senior associate works primarily on the antibiotic resistance project, which advances research and advocates for policies to slow the emergence of antibiotic resistance through improved use, and spur the innovation of urgently needed new antibiotics. The position requires creation and implementation of strategic communications plans and the ability to write clearly about highly complex health and science issues; excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities; proven writing and editing abilities for print and online platforms; and experience working with media and senior staff. The position will occasionally support other projects within the Pew health portfolio and initiatives to support institutional communications functions.
Media Relations, Public Engagement, and Communications Strategy
- Works with communications colleagues to develop and implement communications strategies that support the antibiotic resistance project.
- Develops and cultivates relationships with a comprehensive list of national and state health and policy reporters, as well as relevant editorial writers and producers.
- Participates in communications and strategic planning to ensure communications strategy is aligned with organizational goals and regularly informs project staff of media outreach efforts and results.
- Manages rapid response process for media coverage, involving relevant colleagues within the program staff and the Communications department, as appropriate.
- Arranges media interviews for spokespersons and helps with preparation for interviews and public appearances.
- Produces talking points for spokespersons, staff, and coalition partners.
- Coordinates media tracking, selection, and electronic distribution of clips to the appropriate project team members.
- Responds to media inquiries and is available for communications tasks outside of working hours on a reasonable basis; coordinates responses as needed with senior communications colleagues to ensure professionalism and message consistency.
- Provides technical assistance on media relations and campaign communications to partner organizations, as required.
- Creates and maintains media lists and press materials.
Publications, Writing, Online & Multimedia Communications
- Writes and edits communications materials personally, or in collaboration with project staff and Pew’s editorial team, including press releases, advisories, statements, speeches, presentations, fact sheets, web analyses, policy briefs, social media content, and other communications materials for public dissemination.
- Works with digital team members to develop, write, and edit materials for the web and social media, and assist in developing and executing digital strategy that optimizes usage of online tools.
- Works in collaboration with digital, multimedia, and graphic design colleagues to develop infographics, videos, and other materials that help achieve project goals.
- Assists programs in preparing research and advocacy reports for publication on Pew’s website; serves as a liaison with program for communications’ digital, graphic, multimedia, and editorial staff.
- Ensures that internal and external audiences are kept apprised of project updates through newsletters, mailings, and other vehicles for direct communications.
- Coordinates activities with colleagues and other organizations with whom we are working.
- Provides communications coordination support to program staff, including handling clearance and approvals as required.
- Maintains regular reporting systems to keep Pew colleagues updated on project developments and potential communications challenges.
- Contributes to the management of Pew communications calendars, and the weekly communications report.
- Develops and maintains an informed awareness of topics relevant to the project, to most effectively carry out all of the activities listed above.
- Provides back-up to communications colleagues throughout the health and science project as needed.
- Contributes to and participates in communications department tasks as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and/or committees as needed.
- Assists other communications program teams as needed.

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
- A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience required in health or science communications. Experience in public policy or advocacy campaigns at the state level is a plus. State government, Capitol Hill, executive branch or agency experience in health, science or nonprofit communication is a preferred.
- Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
- Demonstrated ability to craft communications strategies that support nonpartisan advocacy for legislative and executive branch policy work at the state and national level.
- Excellent written, verbal, and oral communications skills, including ability to synthesize material, focus on the essence of an issue or research findings and then communicate it to a broader audience in a captivating manner.
- Significant experience in earned media, with understanding of media operations and news organizations and experience pitching both event-based press materials (announcements, bills, agreements, etc.) and product-based press materials (statements, reports, polls, etc.). Understanding of traditional and social media with a keen sense of how to adapt to changes in the landscape.
- Experience creating and maintaining media lists.
- Ability to work well in a team and independently.
