At GenUnity, our 14-week, 3-hour/week community leadership programs support diverse adults to unpack issues, learn civic practices (e.g., appreciative inquiry), build new relationships, and develop plans for how they can uniquely drive change. Members translate their growth into sustained action as part of our lifelong community.

We are already seeing impact in real-time. Our members are driving systemic changes in their local and state governments – whether through introducing legislation, collaborating with local governments on new projects, or supporting the efforts of existing nonprofits.

GenUnity was co-founded in 2019 by Jerren Chang and Nimisha Ganesh, while they were graduate students at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School. GenUnity was recognized as one of the “22 Startups to watch in Boston in 2022” and a President’s Innovation Challenge finalist. GenUnity was also part of the Harvard Innovation Labs’ Venture Incubation Program and Harvard Business School’s Rock Accelerator.

Role Overview

GenUnity is seeking a creative, dynamic leader who will translate our program impact into a broader movement to strengthen the capacity of diverse, everyday adults to drive change on community issues.

The Marketing Director will drive the creation and implementation of our marketing strategy to advance our overall strategic goals, especially the growth of our employer partners as the main source of earned revenue. You will be focused on telling our story using multiple channels (e.g., social media, press, panels) to reach multiple stakeholders (e.g., businesses, residents, community groups). You will collaborate directly with the GenUnity founding team and be an integral part of a high impact, up-and-coming social enterprise.


This is a leadership role for a seasoned, Boston-based marketing professional – someone who enjoys story-telling, strategic thinking, and building long-term, collaborative partnerships. In addition to the key responsibilities listed below and over time, this role may evolve to support GenUnity’s growth beyond Boston.

Key responsibilities include:


  • Develop 1-year marketing strategy that supports GenUnity’s annual strategic goals on employer partnership building, fundraising, and member recruitment
  • Design implementation plan and collaborate with GenUnity founding team on staffing plan, budget, and other resources
  • Create performance metrics to track and evaluate success of marketing efforts
  • Engage with GenUnity founding team to regularly assess progress towards marketing goals and consider strategic adjustments
  • Develop recommendations on how to continuously improve our marketing strategy to advance our broader organizational goals

Implementation and Team Management

  • Execute and/or oversee execution of marketing strategy in timely and effective manner
  • Maintain and continuously strengthen GenUnity’s online presence
  • Manage and coach marketing team including social media specialist (e.g., provide guidance and feedback on social media)
  • Monitor marketing progress and submit performance assessments
  • Collect photos, quotes, and stories for our program and key stakeholders

Partnership Building

  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with marketing and communications partners, including external parties in media (online, radio, newspapers) as well as marketing leads at partner organizations
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for broader awareness and thought leadership (e.g., panels, coalitions, op-eds)
  • Collaborate with founders to amplify Boston-based success stories to increase national presence and possibilities for expansion

About You

  • Highly relational, with a strong belief in the importance of relationship-building for success, both internally and externally
  • Track record of “rolling up your sleeves” and working collaboratively with others to bring projects to successful completion
  • A great sense of humor—we’re serious about not taking ourselves too seriously

Your experience and skills

  • Prior experience developing and marketing a marketing and communications strategy in a startup, corporate, nonprofit, and/or government context
  • People leadership skills, including coaching and project management experience, including work-planning or process management
  • Superb organizational skills, with the ability to balance multiple and competing priorities and effectively delegate tasks
  • Grounds work in racial equity: analyzes and addresses the structural impacts of policies, practices, and decisions on different racial groups, and works to eliminate inequities and representation barriers
  • Enjoys working in a dynamic start-up environment and managing the complexities of multi-stakeholder collaboration
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills

Other Role Details

Compensation: salary will be all-in $100K, including a base salary of $90K per year and $10K per year in benefits (listed below). Note that salaries are expected to rise over time with the growth of the organization.

Benefits: Health, dental, and vision benefits will be provided by GenUnity. Frequent opportunities to work from home.

Location: Boston, MA (with flexible, remote-work options)
