(provide an overview of the role—it’s function, any key stakeholder relationships, and purpose) WES is looking for a savvy, detail-oriented managing editor to join our strategic communications team. Candidates must have the ability to synthesize complex information from a variety of internal and external subject matter experts and sources into compelling and flawless articles, posts, reports, and other collateral. Candidates must possess a zeal for encouraging collaboration and acting as a connector between a wide range of programs and departments. Candidates must have strong organizational and editing skills, and the ability to adopt and enforce the style, tone, and voice of the organization. Candidates must have appropriate media, project management, calendaring, outreach, reporting, and strategy experience. Candidates must be adept at obtaining direction from (and reporting on status to) senior leadership; directly managing communications staff and external resources; indirectly managing cross-functional peers to deadline. Finally, candidates must be enthusiastic and curious about international education, global mobility, immigrant integration, philanthropy, and similar topics.

Duties included but not limited to:

  • Accountable for ensuring editorial quality and driving improvement in communications efforts across WES
  • Creating, modifying, and managing processes that insure the delivery of high-quality, mission-aligned content from a variety of contributors and sources throughout the organization
  • Overseeing the timely, responsive, and transparent execution of the editorial calendar in alignment with and augmenting departmental, programmatic, social, and seasonal calendars
  • Meeting with department heads, program directors, subject matter experts, communications managers, and other personnel to identify effective and strategic content creation opportunities and keep all team members updated on work progress.
  • Supervising the content creation process from ideation through writing through editing and publishing, including necessary multimedia and preparation for appropriate paid, earned, and owned channels, necessary metadata, etc.
  • Planning/approving assignments for writers and editors; determining schedules and managing deadlines; evaluating copy for compliance with policies, style, and tone; identifying and tracking meaningful measures of audience engagement and impact
  • Direct management of key strategic communications staff
  • Supporting broader strategic communications team by editing and proofing additional content as necessary and undertaking additional/special projects as assigned or required

  • Demonstrate a deep commitment to elevating immigrants’ voices and experiences through WES’ work and to advancing equity, inclusion, and diversity

Requirements:

(list required education, skills, knowledge and experience necessary to apply)

  • Bachelor’s Degree with focus on digital journalism, creative writing, digital media, business communications, or communication arts, or equivalent relevant experience
  • 7+ years’ experience executing the production of a variety of high-quality content for multiple audiences
  • Excellent creative writing and editing skills ready to communicate with a global audience in a compelling manner
  • Superior interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of CMSs (prefer WordPress), ticketing systems (JIRA), collaboration tools, Microsoft Office, and SEO fundamentals
  • Well versed in online collaboration tools; calendaring tools; metrics, analytics, and reporting
  • Knowledge of design and marketing automation principles, as well as techniques and technologies for increasing the quality of editorial output, efficiency, and transparency
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills with a proven record of meeting deadlines
  • Management experience
  • The ability to manage multiple complex content projects in various stages simultaneously
  • Ability to balance big picture business acumen with attention to finer details
  • Demonstrated ability to work with subject matter experts from a variety of backgrounds and communications skill levels to develop superior content
  • Engaged and interested in media and social media trends, newshooks, and poised to uncover new content opportunities
  • Relevant publication history a plus
