For nearly 40 years, Martha’s Table has worked to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities by increasing access to quality education programs, healthy food, and family supports. Despite D.C.’s recent growth, immense inequities—in economic, health, educational, and other systems—continue to disproportionately affect residents living east of the Anacostia River. Over the past year, Martha’s Table has dramatically expanded our programs and refined our mission to respond to these challenges. In June of 2018, we opened our new headquarters in the Hillsdale/Fort Stanton neighborhood of Southeast D.C., later opening our satellite location in Columbia Heights in Northwest D.C. in March of this year. With these two new facilities—and our series of comprehensive health and wellness, education, and family support programming—we are committed to helping families on both sides of the Anacostia River thrive.

Position Overview:

The Assistant Director of Communications a dynamic, results-driven leader who effectively balances competing priorities to promote the resources and reputation of Martha’s Table. This leader is responsible for driving marketing and communications efforts to advance strategic organizational priorities. He/she reports to the Director of Development and manages the Communications Coordinator and Communications Intern(s).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 Leads the development and implementation of the organization’s marketing and communication strategies to attract and engage external stakeholders, including volunteers, community members, donors, and broader audiences.

 Supervises the creation of a wide variety of copy and design for fliers, social media, e-newsletters, the organizational website, advertisements, outreach materials, event collateral, and more.

 Supervises organization’s digital presence on social medial and other channels, including identifying opportunities for brand engagement and proactively engaging online supporters.

 Shapes organizational messaging, writes press releases and op-eds for publication, and drafts speeches and talking points for public events and media interviews.

 Coaches organizational leaders and front-line team members in strategic messaging, media interviews, and public speaking. Publicly represents Martha’s Table in front of media and key stakeholders.

 Builds and maintains network with press and other stakeholders to proactively pitch Martha’s Table to relevant outlets.

 Works cross-organizationally to review and approve internal and external communications to ensure message discipline and brand consistency.

 Tracks success of marketing and communications efforts through metrics, including but not limited to social media engagements, post visibility, and response time.

 Maintains Communication Department’s expense budget.

 Manages Communications Team, including the Communications Coordinator and Communications Intern(s), supporting their growth and development.

 Proactively stays up-to-date and engaged with Martha’s Table’s programs and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications:

 Required:

o Expert knowledge of marketing and communications best practice, including but not limited to brand strategy development, public relations, audience segmentation, core message development, and online engagement.
o Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including storytelling, copy editing, and ability to serve as public ambassador for organization.
o Strong project management skills with ability to balance multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
o Strong collaboration skills with ability to maintain effective and positive working relationships across the organization.
o Embodies the Martha’s Table playbook, including a firm belief in equity and opportunity; commitment to displaying high respect, high dignity, and high integrity at all times; and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude.
o Ability to work events occasionally on nights and weekends.

 Preferred:

o A passion for MT’s mission
o Supervisory experience
o Creativity and innovative thinking
o Experience and skills in graphic design
o Proficiency in WordPress, Constant Contact, Sprout Social, and Meltwater
o Bachelor’s degree and/or five years of professional experience in nonprofit environment
