ComNetworkMIAMI: Racism — Challenging Entrenched Narratives and Practices
CommNetworkMiami, a local chapter of the national The Communications Network, is hosting regular, bi-monthly breakfast gatherings for South Florida nonprofit and social sector communicators. For our second event, we’ll explore the topics and themes raised in the most recent release of Change Agent, The Communications Network’s annual, national print journal. The issue centers on racism in an effort to challenge entrenched narratives and practices.
We’ll be joined via video conference by Sean Gibbons, CEO of The Communications Network and Amrit Dhillon, associate director of programs for Aspen Institute’s The Bridge, a program on race, identity and inclusion. Sean will share insights gleaned through producing Change Agent and the recent op-ed he co-authored with Michele Norris that explored how nonprofits and foundations might unintentionally promote racism. Amrit will discuss her work with The Bridge and the award-winning Race Card Project. We’ll then have an open discussion about how we might overcome practices that reinforce racism and better integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into our work.
