ComNetworkDETROIT: Roundtable and Open Floor about #BlackLivesMatter, George Floyd, and Civil Unrest
So much has changed in one week… and at the same time, there is nothing new about the police brutality and racial unrest unfolding now. Is your organization talking about it? How are your communication plans shifting quickly amidst the rapidly-changing environment? Let’s bring our questions and our best practices to our network and compare notes.
We’re holding a virtual ComNet Detroit gathering, Wednesday June 3, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. There won’t be a formal panel discussion or speaker. Instead, we’d like to hold space for you to share what you’re doing now and to get advice from the network where needed. We will join on Zoom to check in and then will use the breakout room feature for small group discussions on a few topics. Come prepared to actively participate, even if it’s just listening deeply and offering your best advice to a colleague.
We’ll host breakout discussions on…
- How should organizations show up right now? What if this isn’t a space you normally work in? Can you take a stand anyway? What if racial justice is your bread and butter? How do you turn current attention into lasting impact?
- What is the communication team’s role in pushing for action? We can craft statements and pitch op-eds, capture photos and produce videos. But it all speaks more if it is backing up clear organizational action. How do we lead from where we sit?
- What else? Let us know what you’d like to talk about, and we’ll compile the answers and find common threads. If there seems to be good interest, we’ll add them to the breakout room list.
