ComNetworkDETROIT: How to Gain Impactful Media Coverage

ComNetLOCAL Event

This event has ended.

Having a media strategy is important for raising awareness about your organization’s work and mission. It can help you attract new advocates, donors, and volunteers; build the credibility of your organization and its leaders; challenge negative perceptions about the people you serve; and help influence public opinion and policy.

How do you get media coverage that makes a difference for your mission? Join us for a conversation with two dynamite local journalists who will help demystify the process of getting an impactful media story published.

Sherri Welch is a senior reporter for Crain’s Detroit Business, covering the nonprofit sector. She’s served in this role for more than 17 years and has earned awards from the Alliance of Area Business publications, the Society of Professional Journalists, Detroit Chapter, the Detroit Press Club Foundation and the Greater Detroit Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Olivia Lewis is a reporter for BridgeDetroit. She was formerly a reporter for the Battle Creek Enquirer and the Indianapolis Star. She has also worked in philanthropy for the Kresge Foundation, the Council of Michigan Foundations and Direct Relief International.

Sherri and Olivia will cover questions like:

  • What makes a good media pitch?
  • Press release vs. story pitch vs. op-ed – which should I choose, when?
  • How do I establish a relationship with a journalist?
  • I got my story covered! Now what?
