ComNetworkDENVER: Meet-up Equitable Communications
About this Event
We have a role to play. And it’s a big one. In a world of heightened rhetoric, racial divide and a widening social inequities gap, the communications sector plays a key role in raising issues and ensuring that our efforts are both equitable and address injustices.
Join ComNetworkDenver as we explore the work of bringing inequities to the forefront of communications. You’ll hear honest conversations about lessons learned and the importance of learning and listening along the way.
Indira Guzman (She/Her/hers), Director, Community Language Cooperative (CLC)
Indira will talk about how language justice challenges the power structures of boards, executives, and mid-level management. Leadership capacity is built when community leaders are able to share their knowledge in their heart language and not be stigmatized for their language and show up in spaces with a full validation of their identities.
Dele Johnson (He/Him/His), Communications Associate, The Denver Foundation
Dele will discuss the ongoing evolution of the Denver Foundation’s bi-annual publication, Give Magazine, to become as equitable as possible and discuss lessons learned and adjustments made from their first issue in 2014 to their most recent issue in 2019.
Sarah McAfee (She/Her/Hers), Director of Communications, Center for Health Progress
Sarah will share highlights from their equity communications campaigns, as well as the failures, their consequences, and the lessons she’s learning. From small language changes you can make now to big questions you should be wrestling with, she’ll bring actionable advice to help you minimize harm and maximize progress.
