ComNetworkDC: Storytelling for Good Workshop

This three-hour workshop will enable those who work in communications for good to understand the basics of storytelling and build storytelling capacity at their organizations. The workshop will be led by Hattaway Communications. It will start with an introduction to storytelling, and will teach you how to use the tools, resources, case studies, and best practices available on the Storytelling for Good platform to craft compelling stories that drive impact.

Why Attend this Workshop: Stories are powerful: Our brains are literally wired biologically to preserve stories, reward them with empathy, and often, make us take action. In today’s information ecosystem, there’s an ever-growing list of platforms and content strategies elbowing for space on an already-crowded stage. While there have never been more ways to reach an audience, it’s harder than ever to really get their attention.

Enter Storytelling for Good. Previously known as Hatch for Good, this online platform was designed with you and your team in mind, and is now under new management at The Communications Network. You are a storyteller. And through Storytelling for Good, you can learn how to tell meaningful stories that resonate.

What You Will Walk Away With: Storytelling for Good will help you and your team plan and execute a storytelling strategy — giving you the tools, resources, and case studies you need to become a storytelling organization from top to bottom.

What is the Agenda for the Afternoon?

Introduction to Strategic Storytelling
Participants will learn the science of storytelling and see research that explains why storytelling is the most effective way to motivate your audiences to take action. We will also introduce them to Storytelling for Good’s interactive lessons, including the Narrative Framework and the Social Impact Story Map.

Story Development
Through a combination of either individual or group exercises, participants will use the tools available on Storytelling for Good to begin crafting their own stories. During this section, facilitators will guide attendees to develop a compelling story-outline. We will also spend time reporting out the stories and discussing key takeaways as a group.

Engagement
During the final section of the workshop, we will discuss practical ideas for using stories in external communication. This would include using stories during media outreach, on social media, and other mediums or channels that are important to your communications.

Happy Hour
Mix and mingle with your fellow storytellers. Reflect on what you’ve learned. And have a drink and bites before you conclude your day.

The cost of this workshop is $20. Space is limited. Refunds are available until 9/10.

Parking is available under the building for $15, there is metered street parking, or you can take the Orange or Red line and walk a few blocks to the office.
