Strategic Public Relations
General Interview Guidelines
Here are general guidelines for
interviews with journalists:
~ Anticipate questions from reporters and prepare
answers for yourself or your spokespeople.
~ Rehearse for interviews
~ Use language that is easy to understand. Avoid
confusing jargon.
~ Incorporate short, concise sound bites into your
answers
~ Avoid responding to a question with “no comment.” This
suggests a negative tone to the reporter and can lead
the interview in the wrong direction. It is often said
that "no comment" is a comment in itself.
~ Remember that being nervous during
interviews—especially television interviews—is
completely normal. Just try to relax and answer
questions slowly and clearly.
~ Use every interaction with a reporter to cultivate a
relationship that will allow you to call that reporter
often with story ideas. Remember that you are a resource
to a reporter about your issue or cause.
