Formulate A Message

Formulating a message is not difficult, but it does take time and effort by leaders of your organization or participants in your cause, event or campaign.

Simply assigning the task to the person in your organization who writes press releases and speeches will not necessarily yield the most effective message.

Instead, developing a message should be an exercise involving your best strategic and tactical thinkers, not only because many brains are better than one, but also because a message must have buy-in from everyone in an organization if it is to be used well and often when communicating with various audiences.

A strong message typically:

  • Addresses a problem or issue

  • Identifies the obstacles or challenges causing the problem (offender)

  • Identifies who needs to act to remedy the problem or issue (leader)

  • Defines the critical action needed that will address the problem
