Council of Michigan Foundations
Vicki J. Rosenberg has served as vice president, education, communication & external relations for the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) since 2007. CMF is a nonprofit membership association of more than 350 grantmaking organizations working together to strengthen, promote and increase philanthropy in Michigan.
Ms. Rosenberg provides strategic direction and management of programs, services and R & D initiatives designed to increase the effectiveness and impact of Michigan foundations including:
Philanthropy 3D, a collaboration with 14 member foundations testing new messages and methods for promoting foundations’ unique value to Michigan and new tools for helping foundation trustees communicate that value to other influential leaders.
Transforming Michigan Philanthropy Through Diversity & Inclusion, an initiative designed to increase the effectiveness of organized philanthropy and catalyze positive social change to transform Michigan communities.
Policyworks for Philanthropy, a project that is strengthening the capacity of 20 regional associations of grantmakers to engage policymakers in support of a vibrant and effective philanthropic sector. The 20 associations serve more than 3,000 foundations in 37 states.
As CMF Vice President & COO (2000-2007), Ms. Rosenberg led strategic thinking, redesigned internal systems and introduced new practices to strengthen educational programs and information services. She introduced the CMF NewsWire (2004), the only custom news service offered by a regional association; led two redesigns of the CMF website and established CMF as a “go to” partner for piloting innovative grantmaker education programs. Ms. Rosenberg developed the CMF Public Policy Committee and the Richardson Fellowship in Government Affairs that supports its work. She led the first phase of work (2004-2008) to increase the association’s cultural competency.
From 1984-2000, Ms. Rosenberg worked for the J. Paul Getty Trust Center for Education in the Arts whose mission was to increase the quality and status of arts education in the nation’s public schools. As a program officer and senior program officer (1986-2000), she developed and managed national grant programs and strategic partnerships including a 15-year initiative that supported R & D centers whose work directly impacted more than two million K-12 students in 13 states through training more than 12,000 teachers and principals from more than 500 school districts. The Getty’s $16 million investment leveraged over $20 million in matching funds. A final report, The Quiet Evolution, was published in 1997. As administrative manager (1984-1988), Ms. Rosenberg managed a $20 million budget and all business services.
Ms. Rosenberg is a frequent presenter at philanthropy conferences. She is a trustee of Michigan’s Children and of the Communications Network and co-chair of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers’ (Forum) Task Force on Grantmaker Education and of PolicyWorks for Philanthropy. Ms. Rosenberg serves on the Council on Foundations’ (COF) Committee on Inclusiveness, the Diversity in Philanthropy Project’s Phase II (D5) strategic planning team, and the Forum/COF Education Design Team. She is a co-author of Essential Skills and Strategies for New Grantmakers, the standard national orientation program for those new to philanthropy.
Ms. Rosenberg served on the Saugatuck (MI) Public Schools’ Board of Education from 2003-2007. She earned a B.A. with honors from the University of Minnesota and M.B.A. from UCLA.
