Dana Vickers Shelley
Director of Strategic Communications
Annie E. Casey Foundation

Dana Vickers Shelley joined the Baltimore-based Annie E. Casey Foundation as director of strategic communications in December 2002. In this capacity, she has oversight for communications, message development and public affairs activities designed to influence key audiences and expand the impact of Casey’s work to help America’s most vulnerable kids, families and communities succeed.

Throughout her career, Dana has developed and implemented strategies to help politicians and government officials meet organizational goals, and help corporate leaders meet business objectives. Prior to joining the Casey Foundation, Dana served as a senior vice president at Edelman Public Relations Worldwide and Fenton Communications, both in Washington, D.C. She has provided communications counsel for clients such as the Coca-Cola Company Task Force, Ford Foundation, NAACP National Voter Fund, Nike, Microsoft and SC Johnson.

From 1993-1997, Dana served in senior communications positions in the Clinton Administration, where she directed on-site media affairs for international business missions led by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to Africa, China, Europe, South America and the Middle East. She also managed outreach efforts in the White House Office of Public Liaison to communicate administration programs and initiatives to African-American and Hispanic citizens. Earlier, she was director of public affairs at Black Enterprise magazine, the spokesperson for the D.C. Lottery Board and the special assistant to the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Dana is a journalism graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Native American Journalists Association and the Communications Network.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a private charitable organization dedicated to fostering public policies, human service reforms and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of today’s vulnerable children and families. Its grantmaking and direct service activities are directed toward reforming public systems; promoting accountability and innovation in policy and practice on behalf of vulnerable children; and building supportive communities that strengthen families. It was established in 1948 by Jim Casey, one of the founders of UPS, who named the Foundation in honor of his mother.
